Alison’s rocky road to Twickenham

After breaking her ankle playing football, Alison Williams was told she may never be able to play sport again.

Alison had five operations on her ankle, but they didn’t help to alleviate the pain. Eventually, she decided to undergo an ankle fusion. This helped but meant it was likely that she wouldn't be able to run again.

Alison’s son began playing rugby at Avonmouth Old Boys rugby club and, after being inspired by the cause, she took part in a charity match in honour of the late Claire Evans, who was the driving force in setting up the women’s team at the club. Despite having never played before, Alison was determined to play the game at a walking-pace and instantly fell in love with the sport.

She then joined the Avonmouth Ladies and has been an integral part of the team ever since. She plays the game mostly at a walking pace, something her team fully supports, and is sometimes able to break out into a run.

This year, the Avonmouth Ladies enjoyed a successful run in the Women’s Junior Plate of the Papa John’s Women’s Cup competition. They beat Welwyn Ladies 39 – 36 in the semi-final to set up a final at Twickenham against Workington Ladies on 1 May.

Despite losing the closely-fought match 27–22, the experience for Alison and the team was special. Speaking about the experience, she said: “Running out at Twickenham is something I’ll never forget. Hearing people shout my name and seeing how proud they all were made it for me. I had to hold back the tears!

“Playing rugby has bettered my life and I am so grateful for it. It has had such an amazing impact on my mental and physical health. The girls, past and present, are such an amazing bunch and the laughs we have on and off the pitch is what makes it all worth it. Rugby really is a sport for everyone.

“I have to give a big shout out to the girls at Avonmouth hockey club. If I hadn’t met some of them on a night out, then I would never have had the courage to get back in to playing sport.

“To everyone at Avonmouth Rugby Club, from my kid’s team to the ladies and even all our supporters young and old, you will never understand how much this club has impacted my life and how grateful I am for it.”
