Safer Recruitment

The RFU is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and adults at risk and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. Children and adults at risk are entitled to participate in rugby union activities in a safe and welcoming environment. The RFU uses the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) to operate and manage a criminal record checking process for those working with children, which helps shape a safe and welcoming environment.

The DBS process is a key aspect of safer recruitment procedures that enable clubs or Constituent Bodies (CBs) to reduce the risk of abuse to children and adults at risk. When recruiting employees or volunteers who work with children or adults at risk, all reasonable steps must be taken to ensure only suitable people are selected.

For information on what clubs and constituent bodies must do to adhere to safer recruitment guidelines, please read:

If your club doesn’t have child members but has adults at risk participating in club activity, you must ensure your club follows the same safer recruitment guidelines.

To help provide people with DBS information specific to them, we have divided our information into two sections. One for Club Safeguarding Officers and one for volunteers, including parents, coaches and anyone who wants to know more about the DBS and safer recruitment at the RFU.

If you’re a Club Safeguarding Officer, please go to the Information for Club Safeguarding Officers section for further information.

If you’re a volunteer, parent or coach, or anyone else who wishes to know more about Safer Recruitment, please go to the Information for Applicants section for further information.
