Auld Greys Keeping Over 55s Active

The indomitable Auld Greys walking rugby squad at Kendal RFC hosted their second annual walking rugby festival recently, with 70 people aged over 55 taking part.

There were teams involved from Midlothian, Fylde, Settle, and Trafford MV, joining the home squad and, with names drawn at random from a hat, teams were allocated and played a series on round robins in sub tropical conditions. There were no winners or losers, just awards for the sportsperson of the day and the team exhibiting outstanding sportsmanship.Auld Greys provided hospitality before and after the games and plan to do it all again next year.

They are also gearing up with Active Cumbria’s Live Longer Better campaign, with plans to increase numbers of over 55s involved in some form of walking sport, whether rugby, football, netball or even golf. They recently had a slot on BBC Radio Cumbria with a 15 min interview about older people getting active at the club. Auld Greys are also planning to attend an NHS activity day in July which is also aimed at getting people active in order to keep them as much as possible out of hospital as much as possible.
