Buckingham RUFC have been raising funds and awareness of local charities and celebrating the contribution to the club of two outstanding club members.
Despite dreadful weather, on December 27th their annual event, Harper’s Day, saw five men’s XV teams competing in a tournament won by new entrants Old Bloxhamists.
More than £2,000 was shared by Buckingham and Winslow Young Carers and Maggie Cancer Support, with around £50,000 raised for many local good causes over the tournament’s 20 years.
Thankfully, spectators were able to shelter in a huge, open-sided marquee on the club patio, provided free by Craig Callahan of Callahan Marquees. And the hog roast, bar and disco were greatly enjoyed.
Earlier in the month, at the annual supporters’ lunch, the club unveiled a framed blazer belonging to Anthony (Tiger) Smith, who died aged 90, having served the club for 70 years, He was a former President, Chairman, Trustee, County Representative, Fixture Secretary and Touch Judge.
His daughter Claire spoke of Tiger's lifelong passion for Buckingham Rugby Club and her sister Suzy said:" I know Dad would be so immensely proud to know how much he was loved by the club, and with this blazer now in pride of place to not be forgotten.”
Thanks to Tiger’s generous legacy, the club has replaced all of the onsite scoreboards with the board on the main pitch dedicated to his memory.
There was resounding applause also when Seth Williams was presented with a framed and inscribed photo, by Club President, Alan Leach, marking Seth’s achievement in playing 300 league games. It’s a record unparalleled in the ranks of Buckingham Rugby Club and a copy of the photo is also on the clubhouse wall.
The next club event is their annual Bavarian beer festival when members turn up in their own versions of lederhosen and a good time is had by all.
