Chilly underwear run

Around 30 rugby club members took to running the streets in their underwear to raise money for charity.

Boxing Day brings the challenges resulting from a surfeit of Christmas food and drink but in Bishops Castle, Shropshire, it brought a further challenge for some 30 rugby club members, that of running around the roads in their underwear.

Mark Davies, Bishop Castle & Onny Valley RFC’s chair,  explained: “We wanted to make sure that we continued to honour our young player Dylan Price, who was killed last year by a hit and run driver just before his 18th birthday.

“We were fundraising for Young Minds, a charity he supported, and this crazy run was something Dylan would have loved to be involved in. Raising awareness of mental health and young people’s wellbeing was as important as raising money for the charity and we thought if you’re brave enough to run around the area in your underwear then you’ll be brave enough to talk or listen when it comes to mental health.”

The idea of running in underwear came from Dylan’s friends, organised and led by club captain Tom Gee. It brought a few raised eyebrows from the Committee but with their OK then raised many smiles on the day and more than £2,500 for Young Minds.
