Christmas Cracker at Sedgefield District RFC

Sedgefield District, Newton Aycliffe and Richmondshire came together to enjoy a game of festive rugby.

With 2022 coming to an end, the weather warm, and lots of turkey and Christmas pudding to run off, Sedgefield District were looking for a social friendly rugby match for Friday 30th December to keep everyone active an involved.

They invited Richmondshire to play a match and then, when initially numbers appeared low, they also invited Newton Aycliffe to send over some players. In the end, all three clubs had almost full squads wanting to take part, so when everyone turned up at Sedgefield they played a social round robin of three 30-minute games, loaning players where needed to create 15-a-side.

Players and spectators enjoyed a great afternoon and, with both Newton Aycliffe and Richmondshire having struggled last season, this impromptu event reminded everyone of just why they enjoy playing rugby.

Doug Wardle Said: “We thought what better way to end the year than with a friendly match and it ended up being a big success. Nobody cared too much about the result, they just enjoyed the round robin shortened matches which gave all the players and supporters a rugby fix and blew the cobwebs away.

"It was so well received and enjoyed we are already looking at doing something similar next Christmas.  Here’s hoping it will have inspired more players to stay involved.”
