Cornwall Chair Kicks Off RFU 150th Anniversary Walk
Cornwall and their Trelawney’s Army of rugby players and fans are never backward in coming forward for a good cause.
Embracing an outstanding one, President Jeff Blackett’s walk celebrating 150 years of the RFU and raising funds for the RFU Injured Players Foundation, Cornwall Chair Dave Saunter recently completed a 150-mile walk across the county.
To kick off and publicise the initiative, Dave spent 11 days striding across some of the country’s most beautiful locations. He included a full marathon from Bodmin to Padstow and back, a half marathon on Bodmin Moor and finished by walking the lovely Polzeath coastal path.
Said Dave: “Our President John Sumnall has challenged each club in the county to walk 150 laps of their pitch. That could be one person or the whole club and we are hoping this both celebrates the RFU’s 150th anniversary after a very tough time recently and also raises lots of money for the RFU Injured Players Foundation, a charity close to all of our hearts.
“With our President and others, I will also join Jeff as he crosses the Tamar from Cornwall to Devon. It certainly promises to be a good year for the return to rugby and I’m sure Cornish clubs will be keen to get involved. We have some of the oldest in the country, including Penryn, who are 150 this year and Falmouth who will be 150 next year.”
On the coastal path walk Dave was accompanied by his wife Jenny and referee Kevvy Williams who will be running the London Marathon for the IPF.
Jeff Blackett will set off, with his wife Sally, on his 150-mile walk covering 10 miles a day over 15 days on a route representing his own rugby journey, starting from Hampshire and US Portsmouth on 22 October. Taking in all the RFU’s geographic Constituent Bodies, he will finish at Twickenham Stadium on 5 November.
