Waterman voted women’s try of the decade
Danielle Waterman has been voted as winner of England Women’s Try of the Decade.
The winner was voted for by England Rugby fans on social media, who picked Waterman’s stunning effort against Canada in November 2016.
The try which saw Waterman collect the ball just outside her own 22m, before crossing in the corner helped the Red Roses to a 39-6 victory at Twickenham Stadium.
Waterman beat off stiff competition to win the vote, defeating Maggie Alphonsi in the final. Alphonsi finished off a fine team move to score against Scotland in 2011 – also at Twickenham.
“I just wanted to say a huge thank you to everyone who took the time to vote for my try against Canada, as their try of the decade,” said Waterman.
“I have slight mixed emotions about that game – it was the first game back at Twickenham for five years, having previously been carried off the pitch injured.
“I had also thought about potentially retiring after the Rio Olympics in August 2016, so to be back at Twickenham wearing the Red Rose in the autumn was a real honour.”
Waterman added: “The try itself I just remember thinking, run as fast as you can and when I finally didn’t pass the ball to Harriet Millar-Mills, I thought, ‘you better get over that line’. To have the girls there in the in-goal area and to have my team mates celebrating with me was awesome. I have real special memories and thanks again.”
Earlier this month, England fans voted for Manu Tuilagi’s try against New Zealand in the Rugby World Cup semi-final last year as their men’s try of the decade.#
