England Women's U18 squad named for anniversary fixture

England women’s U18 head coach James Cooper has named his matchday squad ahead of the side’s fixture against Wales next month

The match against Wales on Sunday, 5 March at Rugby School (K.O. 13:00) will be England’s first of 2023 and will celebrate 200 years since the game of rugby was first born.

An extended squad of 34 came together for a three-day training camp at Lilleshall National Sport Centre last week before the final 23 was selected for the landmark fixture, which will be live streamed on England Rugby channels.

Cooper said: “Every young woman who laced up their boots at our recent training camp put their hand up and showed they’re committed to doing what’s needed to pull on an England jersey. The coaching staff could’ve comfortably chosen any one of those 34 players to play in this milestone match against Wales, and so we’re really pleased with the strength of the matchday squad we’ve selected.

“Playing in the 200-year anniversary match against Wales will be very special for all involved and something the players will remember for years to come. I urge them to keep that in mind when they run out onto the pitch.

“Congratulations to the 23 players selected and thank you to the Centres of Excellence, clubs and colleges, coaches, parents and guardians who helped them get to this point.”

England’s player pathway programme – of which the women’s U18 is an important part – is a vital development tool for future international rugby and growth of the women’s game, especially during a new era ahead of a home 2025 Rugby World Cup.

Tickets to the 200-year anniversary game at Rugby School against Wales are available here. Profits from ticket sales will be split between the Injured Players Foundation and the school's 1823 Bursary. The Bursary offers means-tested places at Rugby School for boys or girls who show significant promise and aptitude for sport and a commitment to Rugby Football.

Entry fee is £8 per adult, £5 per child
