Famous faces thank the rugby family
Duke of Sussex, Jonny Wilkinson, Eddie Jones and Sarah Hunter say thank you for pitching in to combat coronavirus.
Since the community game was suspended on 20 March, rugby clubs up and down the country have pitched in to help out in a range of ways including food deliveries to key workers and the vulnerable, raising money for charity, making calls to elderly members and using their facilities for food banks.
“We have all been inspired by the many stories across the game of the rugby family working together to support those who are the most vulnerable in their community – this encapsulates the unique spirt of rugby and reinforces that clubs across our community game are more than just rugby clubs in their local communities,” said Rugby Football Union CEO Bill Sweeney.
“We are on top of this most challenging of times and I am confident that this spirit and resilience during this period will ensure we will come through this together and emerge stronger.”
As part of the Pitch In campaign, England Rugby will look to recognise those who have played their part during lockdown and shown the true core values of the game.
Rallying call
“Rugby clubs are at the heart of their community and we couldn’t be prouder by what they have achieved during this period,” said Rugby Development Director Steve Grainger.
“But the hard work isn’t over and when the time is right we will be calling on everyone to pitch in and play their part in getting their local rugby club back up and running again.
“Players, coaches, referees, volunteers, parents and supporters all have their part to play in helping their clubs get our great game back on and we know they will answer the call.”
Plans to support the re-launch of the community game include a national week celebrating rugby. For more information in the coming weeks, keep an eye on England Rugby social media channels and EnglandRugby.com.
Current Government guidelines mean that some limited training with social distancing measures and hygiene precautions can take place.
