Beccehamian's 15-family friendly

Beccehamian RFC, in South East London, hosted an over 18s adult family squad game on Easter Saturday, with 39 players from 15 families, entirely fielded by 14 sets of fathers and sons, three sets of uncles and nephews and eight sets of brothers.

The opposition, local friends and neighbours from Park House RFC, based two miles away, also fielded a side including four fathers and sons.

Rhis was organised as an Easter get together, and a chance for some of the fathers to play their swansong and bucket list game alongside their sons, all having graduated at various stages through the Beccehamian RFC Mini & Youth sections.

Ages ranged from the just turned 18-year-olds now eligible for adult rugby, to the more senior 60-year-old Tim Dempsey, and Beccs club secretary Andy Munro(58), playing with his son Harry and step-son Ollie, both 24. A swan song also for Mike Hamm (51) playing with his three sons Tom (23), Matt (21) and George (18),

Beccehamian RFC mini and youth sections were first established back in 1974, with 90% of the senior sides formed by players who have come through those sections.

July 2023 will also mark the 90th anniversary of the formation of Beccehamian RFC in 1933 - as well as a hugely exciting time for the club in general, who will shortly start building work on a brand new clubhouse extension, which will nearly double the footprint, massively improving the changing room and physio/medical facilities for home and visiting teams, including dedicated space for the women's team, formed in 1999, and girls’ section. There will also be improved disabled access, better social spaces, function rooms and a rooftop terrace.

A truly fantastic day was had by all, the game final score was Beccs 53 v Parkhouse 27 but nobody really cared and the event included much merriment at the clubhouse social afterwards, as they look forward to similar fixtures in the future and exciting times ahead with the building work about to begin.
