Nothing says teamwork and respect like the NHS
In celebration of the NHS' 72nd birthday, England Rugby have lit up the iconic Twickenham line-out statue in blue.
Messages of thanks and support were also shared inside the home of England Rugby as the country celebrates the incredible work of those on front line.
This year, NHS Together is celebrating not only the work of the NHS, but also key workers who have helped keep the country moving through the coronavirus pandemic.
The RFU are also encouraging rugby fans to join the rest of the nation in a mass celebration on Sunday.
At 5pm on the 5th July people are being asked to come together on their doorsteps to applaud the commitment, courage and sacrifice shown by those NHS staff and key workers.
People are also encouraged to stay for a few minutes and join a socially distanced moment with friends and neighbours.
Heroes
England head coach Eddie Jones has given a personal thanks to key workers and NHS staff.
"On behalf of the rugby family I’d like to say a huge thanks to all of the rugby staff, the key workers and everyone else who have done so much to tackle the coronavirus," said Jones. "We really appreciate your efforts and long hours of hard work.
"You are truly heroes and for those involved in rugby get out on your doorstep at 5pm on 5 July and raise a glass to the NHS for their courage, commitment and sacrifice. Thank you very much for all you have done and continue to do for us. We are truly grateful."
His sentiments were echoed by Red Roses back Lydia Thompson, who herself spent time working for the NHS.
“I just want to say a huge thank you to the NHS, not just for the incredible work you have done over the last few months but also the last 72 years,” said Thompson.
“I feel incredibly privileged to have worked for a short period as an occupational therapist in the NHS alongside some of the most inspirational people I have ever met who always put a smile on your face. I learned so much from being part of that team and knowing how hard you have to work to help each other out and that is what I have carried along into my rugby career.
“I also want to say thank you to all the key workers, I don’t think we realise how much of the backbone you guys are for our country, how much you do, how much we need you and I want to say we are incredibly grateful for the continued work you have done over this last period. Happy Birthday to the NHS.”
