Pirates providing food help
The Cornish Pirates recently launched a food donation partnership at their home matches.
When the Pirates took on London Scottish at the Mennaye Field in October, they launched a partnership with Growing Links charity which serves West Cornwall and gave supporters the opportunity to donate food throughout forthcoming home matches.
Growing Links runs the Community Garden at Gulval, together with their Street Food Project. Their food bank delivers over 75 food parcels to families and people in and around Penzance every week, as well as providing a hot, healthy cooked meal every evening of the year to anyone without the facilities to cook for themselves.
With the increased cost of living, demand has seen a dramatic increase and, in the present climate, will rise still further. Growing Links have at times struggled to keep up with demand, so Pirates and their fans will play an important part in the fight against escalating food poverty and the unmet needs of individuals and households in Penzance and the wider area of West Cornwall.
Taking food to the game
Supporters will be taking along tinned and non-perishable goods from a shopping list to a drop-off area by the clubhouse corner of the ground on match days.
The partnership between the Cornish Pirates and Growing Links is seen as an exciting one, making a positive impact on the local community. It is also one that that they hope to develop further.
Rebecca Thomas, CEO of Cornish Pirates said: “We are going through rapidly changing and uncertain economic times, and an increasing number of people and families will be feeling the effects of this. The work of Growing Links and other food banks within local areas is vitally important and we are really pleased to be able to support this cause.”
