Scunthorpe Sleigh their Santa Challenge

Scunthorpe RUFC mini and junior players, together with some of the senior section, have found a seasonal way to stay fit through lockdown and beyond.

They are keeping active and looking after their mental wellbeing by cycling, running and walking the distance to the North Pole to see Santa and home again in time for the big day.

There’s no denying their Christmas spirit, with names like Deck the Mauls and Chairman Tone’s Tinsel Trotters, within no time at all they had sleighed the Polar challenge and turned back to offer Santa more support from his little helpers. They’re also raising money along the way to keep the club running.

One of the U8s, Caleb Horton, was without a team for the challenge and decided, in his beloved club kit, to cycle the miles between Scunthorpe RUFC and Twickenham, a total of 195 miles. Caleb has now been snapped up by a team en route to the North Pole and his miles will be included in the race to Santa. There’s a huge effort being put in, with runners and riders from three years old to the ever youthful Keith Robinson who’s about to celebrate his 81st birthday.

Age grade Chair Tony Wilkinson said: “I’m very proud of the efforts of the whole club in getting behind this, and must thank Gavin Drewry, Ian Lee and their significantly better halves, Emma Drewry and Emma Mundey, for pushing the idea.

“We have senior committee, senior players and minis and juniors coming together, with everyone really grabbing the spirit by both hands. Who doesn’t want to meet the big guy? (not me, Santa). When I heard about what young Caleb was doing it spurred me on and I went out for a five mile jog – not something I’ve ever done in November. He is one amazing and inspiring young man.

“For our club, for everyone’s mental health and wellbeing during lockdown, when many people may be feeling the effects of the dark and cold nights; for the camaraderie rugby brings, for Caleb and the future generations of rugby - there is a really positive feel and we are truly one big rugby family.”
