Summer Meals for Richmond Youngsters
Richmond Rugby knew the most vulnerable youngsters in their community faced hardship as schools shut over the summer.
Teaming up with England legend and current British & Irish Lions President, Jason Leonard, and his charity The Atlas Foundation, they applied for funding via the London Community Response Fund to feed children who need it through the summer.
Awarded a grant to supply local school children in need with a daily nutritional meal in the school holidays, they’ve linked with club partner schools to help ensure that vulnerable children receive a nutritional cooked meal for positive physical and mental wellbeing.
Richmond Rugby Head of Community, Dom Palacio, said: “From mid-July until schools return in September, our catering team at the Richmond Athletic Association will cook meals each weekday.
"These will go to up to 40 local school pupils identified and supported by our club partner schools, in particular Grey Court School, with help from the Ham Youth Club Richmond.
“The meals will be delivered by our incredible army of Richmond Rugby volunteers, who’ve been working exceptionally hard these past few months, supporting the Dons Local Action Group at our food collection points every Saturday at the Athletic Ground and daily at Tesco Extra Twickenham.”
Chris Rhodes, head teacher at Grey Court School, added: “This is a hugely important announcement by Richmond Rugby Club and one which we are extremely happy to support and help facilitate throughout the summer holidays.
"We have had some great discussions with the club and Ham Youth Centre Richmond and strongly believe this will make a huge difference to those children in need throughout our community.”
