Thanking Terry an Extraordinary Volunteer

We often say that volunteers are the lifeblood of our rugby clubs

But when one needs replacing by two you know what an outstanding role they have played.

That was the case with Royal Wooton Bassett RFC’s treasurer, Terry Aylett, who stepped down after more than 43 years’ service to his club, which this year celebrates its 50th anniversary.

Terry was presented with the Bowden Wildash Salver, awarded each year to a special Dorset & Wilts volunteer, to mark his contribution.

"During Terry’s tenure the club has grown hugely and had a major relocation project of a couple of million pounds," said club chair Chris Elias. "He has been incredible and put in so many man hours that we needed two people to replace him in the role. He has kept our club financially sound with his prudent financial management and we are very grateful to him."

At the Royal Wooton Bassett club all of their volunteers are very visible, with no less than 100 pictures and roles on a noticeboard. They were out in force for the first home game of the season and the Jim McCue Memorial Match which honours the first soldier repatriated through Wooton Bassett having been killed in Iraq serving with REME. The club is forging very strong links with the Army and the match is an integral part of that relationship.

Their golden jubilee will be celebrated throughout the season, with a lunch on September 24th involving as many founder players as possible.
