Tribute to Paul Rendall

The RFU pays tribute to former England prop Paul Rendall, who has died aged 69 after suffering from Motor Neurone Disease

Known to teammates as The Judge, for the role he fulfilled on tour when he apportioned fines to members of the squad, Paul was awarded 28 England caps.

His first came in 1984 when he was 30, and his last in 1991 at the age of 37. He also played for the Barbarians and the World XV.

One of rugby union’s engaging characters, after retiring from playing Paul was head coach and Director of Rugby at Bracknell RFC, overseeing five promotions in six seasons.

Peter Wheeler, who played for England alongside him as hooker, said: “Paul was tremendously strong and solid in the scrum, and I always felt safe with him as my prop. He was also great fun, a very special character.

"I have a picture of me prosecuting at a court session on tour looking at The Judge in fits of laughter. He always had words of wisdom that made everyone laugh.  I am very sad that he has died. He will be very much missed by the game and all who knew him.”

John Spencer, Barbarians President, added: “Paul and Jeff Probyn, as two great props together, were always at the centre of fun and enjoyment.

"I also saw Paul’s excellent coaching of Bracknell when they were in the same league as my club, Wharfdale. He was well respected throughout the world as an outstanding prop with a great sense of humour.”
