Warrington U8s Cheering England On

There’s nothing Henry Barret loves more than making runs to set up tries for his team mates on the rugby pitch. He plays for Warrington RUFC U8s, where his dad Chris is one of the coaches and, like the rest of his friends, he is really missing rugby in the current lockdown.

During the first lockdown the U8s made a pass it on video and England coach Eddie Jones sent them a thumbs up. So now that they can’t play, the youngsters have sent a message to their England rugby heroes wishing them luck for the forthcoming Quilter Internationals as part of the Autumn Nations Cup.

“The players are massively missing their rugby and will be watching England and cheering them on,” said Chris.

Henry added: “Rugby is the best part of the week. It’s great to play with my friends and it makes us all smile. We really want England to win. It will cheer us all up.”

Dave Evans, another U8 coach who teaches PE at Sandbach School said: “We’ve got a great bunch of 40 under eight players at the club and try to instil confidence alongside developing skills.

“A player of the week is chosen based on the core values of teamwork, respect, enjoyment, discipline and sportsmanship. We form a socially distanced tunnel, parents on one side and players on the other, and present the player who has clearly shown the values with a certificate.

“We are growing numbers and numbers of coaches and right now the players are missing all the enjoyment they get from their rugby. It’s great to know that the England players have read our message, they are real role models for the kids.”

While the England squad is restricted to a controlled environment and cut off from family and fans, messages of support are especially welcome. You can send your pictures and messages via patriciamowbray@rfu.com.
