Eastern Counties RFU’s social rugby programme thrives as families take to the pitch

Eastern Counties RFU recently launched a new men’s social playing offer designed to support clubs in Norfolk, Suffolk and Cambridgeshire.

The offering is designed to support clubs with small player numbers, provide game time for those not playing regularly, and offer a fun, semi-regular playing opportunity.

Following the success of the first two social pitch-up fixtures in February, attracting 58 players from 10 different clubs, the third event brought a special family element to the pitch. Several father-son duos and a pair of brothers took part, showcasing rugby’s ability to bring people together.

Among them were Luke and Edwin Fey, Steve and Harvey Brown, Ian and Owen Luck, and brothers Trevor and Kyle Stanford, all of whom laced up their boots for the fixture hosted at March Bears RFC in Cambridgeshire.

Owen Luck said: “Playing alongside my dad is one of my biggest achievements. To play and link up with him is something I won’t forget and always wanted to do; all I'm waiting for is to assist a try for him!

“The social rugby programme is an incredible way for more family members to play alongside and against each other. You can't take away the feeling of a dad playing with his son - nothing feels better!”

The social rugby initiative was launched to encourage more people to play the game in a friendly, inclusive environment. Fixtures are held at central venues, with clubs encouraged to bring as many players as possible.

Roger Pierson, Chair of Eastern Counties Rugby, highlighted the programme’s long-term potential: "We will assess how this initiative has benefitted players, with the ambition of extending it into next season.

"It’s crucial to recognise that different formats of the game can attract new and returning players, offering them a way to enjoy our great sport. The Luck family’s experience underlines why this programme matters, and we wish them continued enjoyment on the pitch."
