England Rugby supports trainee teachers in delivering rugby
England Rugby has collaborated with St Mary’s University to provide training and support for student teachers.
England Rugby Coach Developers delivered a series of training sessions based on the England Rugby Primary and Secondary Schools courses focusing on building skills and confidence in teaching the sport.
While the Primary award focuses on non-contact rugby and the Secondary on contact, both support participants in delivering the National Curriculum and coaching, refereeing, and facilitating the game.
Sara Daniels, lecturer in Physical Education at St Mary’s, said: “The course provided a balanced mix of both theoretical and practical elements, which proved to be an excellent complement to the way we deliver our course material.
“The training supported the development of students' confidence in safely and effectively leading rugby sessions. By equipping them with the necessary technical skills and safety protocols, we are ensuring that our students are well-prepared to deliver rugby safely while fostering a positive, supportive learning environment for all participants.”
The Coach Developers also delivered a session on a games-based approach to learning. The session aimed to bridge the gap between academic learning and pragmatic application to help teachers deliver sessions to students.
Lecturer Alex Beckey said: “The RFU's session was a resounding success, offering the students a deeper understanding and appreciation of how to translate theory into practice.
“The session will hopefully empower the students to adopt a more thoughtful, holistic and effective approach to teaching and coaching in the future.”
