Meg Jones inspires the next generation at Loughborough RFC
Red Rose Megan Jones made young girls dreams come true as she attended a rugby-filled day for 150 players at LRFC.
The England centre recently visited the club to support, cheer and chat to players in a day they’d never forget. It was also a special moment for Meg, returning to the area where she attended university to support its local rugby club.
To mark the occasion, LRFC involved all its female players from minis to U14s and invited other clubs to participate.
The U9s and U10s got the chance to get tips from Jones as they played round robin matches with teams from Melton, Market Harborough, Market Bosworth, Long Eaton and Nottingham Casuals.
Supporting the older girls, the LRFC minis formed a guard of honour for the U12s and 14s matches against players from Loughborough, Hinckley, Lutterworth and Leicester Forest.
“It was some of the best rugby I’ve seen from the girls – massive congratulations to you all! The tunnel and flag waving were brilliant and getting Meg involved was a great inspiration and really helped lift the girls,” said coach Lance Charity.
Post-matches, the players, parents and coaches huddled in the clubhouse for a Q&A with Meg, who also signed shirts, balls, napkins and took photos.
“It was amazing today, I was buzzing when I got home,” said Jones. “You have a very special club and should be proud of what you’ve built and continue to build.”
“Meg was so gracious with her time. She’s a true inspiration for the girls,” said parent, Lucy Smith.
Liz Jenkin, another parent, added: “It gives my daughter so much confidence to play girls-only tournaments. She loved having Meg there cheering her on!”
