Rugby clubs recognised by King’s Award
Two rugby clubs recently received The King’s Award for Voluntary Service for outstanding community work.
Pocklington Rugby in the Community and Eccles Rugby Football Club have both received the highest award given to voluntary groups in the UK, equivalent to an MBE.
Eccles RFC won the award thanks to their 128 volunteers devoting over 30,000 hours to grassroots rugby, delivering health and wellbeing benefits to children and adults throughout their community.
Chris Gaffey, Chairman of Eccles RFC, said: “I’m delighted that this prestigious honour has recognised the work of our community club, and pays tribute to the dedicated effort and commitment of our volunteers.
“All of our volunteers can be immensely proud of their contribution to this tremendous achievement.”
Pocklington Rugby in the Community is the charity arm of Pocklington Rugby Club and is supported by more than 75 volunteers. Their mission is to help those who feel isolated, lonely, or vulnerable which they do through targeted social events, like ‘Friday Social’. The monthly social event brings together people in the community to meet for a cup of tea, cake, and a chat.
They also host inclusive sporting activities that help adults with learning disabilities stay active whilst having fun.
Chair Andy Bowden said: “The King's Award honours the selfless dedication of volunteers who consistently go above and beyond in offering their invaluable support.
“It rewards the tireless efforts to uplift, support, and connect the local community. The volunteers are far more than event helpers, they are the backbone of our mission, building relationships that support the very foundation of the community.
“Through our innovative, community-driven approach, we are bringing people together in an inclusive environment where members learn new skills, form friendships, and build confidence. This commitment has sparked significant growth in community involvement, promoting a more connected, welcoming, and supportive Pocklington.
“Over the last three years, I’m proud to say we’ve interacted with over 80 local groups and charities to support volunteering within the community and look forward to working with many more over the years to come!”
RFU Chief Executive, Bill Sweeney, said: “Eccles Rugby Football Club and Pocklington Rugby in the Community deserve huge congratulations for this well-deserved award. They epitomise the best of our community rugby clubs’ work to enrich lives and make a difference in their communities.”
The groups will receive their awards from Lord-Lieutenants over the coming months before representatives from each will attend a Royal Garden Party next May.
