Tommy Dann Cup returns for fourth year running
The fourth edition of the Tommy Dann Cup will take place this Saturday at Cambridge University Rugby Club and will be raising funds for the NSPiRED programme, run by The Jonny Wilkinson Charitable Foundation.
The event is held in memory of former teacher and player, Tommy Dann, who died in February 2021.
Tommy was an excellent rugby player, cricketer, and all-round sportsman. He embraced the historic rivalries of the region, playing rugby for both the Shelford and Cambridge Rugby Clubs, having also coached at both The Perse and The Leys schools.
Ed Fairey, part of the organising group, said: “All that knew Tommy were in awe of his natural ability to turn his hand at any sport he tried. As a coach, he was admired for his dedication, unrelenting positivity, and innate ability to inspire everyone to fulfil their potential.
“Tommy was one of the most genuine and outgoing personalities around, with an infectious laugh to match – he is greatly missed by all who knew him.
“The match came about to remember and celebrate all that he has done. As it’s evolved over the past few years, the event enables us to bring the wider community together and offers a chance for everyone to reconnect and spend time with friends and family.

“We played our first game between the Old Boys teams in March 2022 and over 1,800 people turned up. We were blown away by the support, but it’s a testament to Tommy’s influence on the lives of so many.”
Alongside the rugby, England players Alex Coles, Fraser Dingwall and Max Malins will take part in a Q&A session, and Jonny Wilkinson will also be in attendance.
Over the past three years, the event has raised over £51,000 for the Jonny Wilkinson Charitable Foundation, which goes toward funding the NSPiRED programme.
The programme helps to support those in teaching and coaching in their mission to inspire the younger generation and raise the profile of mental wellbeing in young people in a positive engaging way.
The match will take place at Cambridge University Rugby Club on Grange Road, kicking off on Saturday, 29 March at 16:00. Tickets and more information are available on the Tommy Dann Match website.
