Joe Marchant

Not many players have featured in every back-line position as well as hooker and open side flanker, but Joe Marchant has done just that.Winchester-born, he has now switched to centre, though wore the number 10 shirt when making a try-scoring England U18 debut against Scotland in 2014. He played a starring role at the 2016 World Rugby U20 Championships and scored twice in the final against Ireland in Manchester. As well as his rugby achievements, Joe has a black belt in Wada Ryu Karate (2011), represented Hampshire in the discus, shot put and hammer (2010-12) and was an English Schools finalist in gymnastics in 2010. He featured for an England XV against the Barbarians in the summer of 2019 and made his Test debut in England’s World Cup warm-up game against Wales at Twickenham. Recently, Marchant was named in Steve Borthwick’s squad for the 2023 Rugby World Cup in France.

Position guide
What is a Center?

The inside centre, who wears 12, and outside centre, wearing 13, have similar roles but often specialise. The 12 becomes first receiver if the fly half is unavailable and is generally larger, able to tackle big opponents, take the lead and distribute the ball for tactical advantage. The outside centre is robust and able to step around defenders at pace, adaptable and with the speed of a wing.
