Abi Burton

Abi Burton grew up in Leeds and, despite being the daughter of former Rugby League player Danny Burton, she began playing Rugby Union at Castleford RFC. Burton then moved to Hartpury college aged 16 and made her Premiership debut for Gloucester-Hartpury aged 17. She was selected as part of the GB Sevens team for the Tokyo Olympics and helped the team to a fourth-placed finish. In 2022, she suffered a serious illness and spent three weeks in a medically-induced coma, as well as missing almost a year of rugby. Fortunately, she recovered to return to playing with Trailfinders Women and even made the GB Sevens squad for the 2024 Paris Olympics. She was recently named in John Mitchell's squad for the 2025 Guinness Women's Six Nations.

What is a Back Row?

The back row consists of two flankers and the No 8. The blind-side flanker wears six and the open-side flanker seven, both specialising in big tackles and winning possession through turnovers. They are fearless, strong and fast to the breakdown. The No 8 secures the ball at the base of the scrum, is an attacking link between forwards and backs and a real force when defending.
