Community Cup youngsters coached by Cornish Pirates

The Cornish Pirates’ Community Cup competition event in Penzance was a big hit with some 200 primary school pupils.

The inaugural event at Mennaye Field in West Cornwall, sponsored by Bradfords Building Supplies, saw boys and girls from years 4, 5 and 6 primary schools welcomed by Cornish Pirates’ joint head coaches Alan Paver and Gavin Cattle.

Each team was then coached by its very own Cornish Pirates player for the entirety of the fast-flowing festival of rugby.

Just a few of the Pirates players who were coaching throughout the day included Harry Bazalgette, Syd Blackmore, AJ Cant, Danny Cutmore, Joe Elderkin, Antonio Kiri Kiri, Alex O’Meara, Carwyn Penny, Arwel Robson, Sam Rodman, Robin Wedlake, and Bear Williams.

After some exciting matches, all players were presented with T-shirts and medals with two teams now able to show off their skills in a Finals Day on Saturday 23rd April, when the Cornish Pirates are at home to Doncaster Knights in the Championship Cup competition.

“We were delighted with the number of schools participating,” said the sponsor’s Sales & Development Manager Nigel Smitheram. “There was some fantastic weather and we were delighted also to be part of it as the Bradfords family.

“Helped by coaching from the Cornish Pirates players, it was noticeable that the schools just got better and better during the day. It was a fantastic event.”

The participating schools included Alverton Community Primary, Connor Downs Academy, Gulval School, Heamoor Community Primary School, Mousehole School, Newlyn School, Penpol School, Pensans Community Primary School, St. Erth School, St. Just Primary School, St. Maddern's C of E School, St. Mary’s C of E Primary School, and Sennen School.
