Ed Slater cycles into Twickenham

Gloucester's Ed Slater and a group of rugby players cycle 350 miles to raise funds for 4Ed campaign after Ed's MND diagnosis.

Ed started out at Milton Keynes RFC, and played with Eastern Suburbs in Sydney, Australia, and Championship club Nottingham early in his career, moving to Leicester Tigers in 2010 for a successful seven years, winning the 2012-13 Premiership title and being made captain. He also captained England Saxons in 2014 before joining Gloucester.

The 34-year-old Gloucester lock, who has three young children, announced his retirement from the sport last month after receiving the diagnosis following months of tests.

Gloucester Rugby and Ed set up the 4Ed campaign to raise awareness of MND and generate funds for his treatment and support of his young family. The campaign is aiming to raise £444,000, inspired by Ed’s shirt number. They have already raised more than 25% of the target.

As part of the 4Ed campaign, the cyclists arrived at Twickenham Stadium at around 7pm last night (August 9) featuring on Gloucester Rugby’s social channels, as well as @4EdFundraising, which followed the cycle throughout using #4Ed.

Ed was joined by Lewis Ludow, Fraser Balmain and Billy Twelvetrees, as well as former Gloucester players Alex Brown, Charlie Sharples and Jim Hamilton. Ed’s close friend, Joe Gorman, and his brother Andy Slater also joined the group alongside Tommy Turner from Gloucester and former Nottingham teammate Sam Raven.

Over the 2022/23 season, several events will take place having been kicked off by the cycle challenge. Supporters wishing to host their own events to raise funds for the 4Ed campaign can continue to do so via the JustGiving page. A fundraising pack will be made available over the coming weeks with more information on how to get involved.
