Ellingham & Ringwood help women & girls reach for the stars

Hampshire rugby club Ellingham & Ringwood’s pioneering role in developing women's and girls’ rugby was recently recognised with a limited edition print of a painting hanging in Twickenham Stadium’s President’s dining room.

That dream has seen the Ellingham & Ringwood club working to develop rugby for women and girls. They run a senior women’s team and girls’ teams at Under 12, Under 14, Under 16 and Under 18 and are proud to have a number of international players who have played at the club. These include: England’s Bryony and Poppy Cleall, Scotland’s Lisa Cockburn, Wales’ Donna Rose and England and Great Britain Sevens’ Alicia Maude.

Having had a limited number of prints made to mark community clubs’ efforts on behalf of the women’s and girls’ playing rugby, Tom has been delighted to see some out in clubhouses where a real difference has been made.

Said Terry Burwell: “Ellingham & Ringwood are certainly a club where developing rugby for women and girls has been a priority for some years. Whether helping to build the international players of the future or grassroots players’ skills and love of the game, they have been outstanding and really deserve this recognition.”

The club’s co-ordinator for girls’ rugby, Duncan Johnson, added: “Our foundations of rugby for women and girls were built by Steve Benson and we are very proud to continue his work which has seen real growth. We hope to help grow the female game for many more years and know that having a home Rugby World Cup will inspire many more women and girls to play.”
