England's 2020 Guinness Six Nations squad: meet the new faces

As Eddie Jones names his squad for the 2020 Guinness Six Nations we have a look at the new faces in this squad.

The Bath-born front row forward recieved his first call-up to an England squad in 2017 for the November internationals after his impressive performances for his club.

The 27-year-old has been part of Eddie Jones's training camps since then, including ahead of the 2019 Rugby World Cup, but is yet to make his full international debut, but did feature for an England XV against the Barbarians last summer.

A graduate of the Bath academy he spent time out on loan at Chippenham, Bournemouth, London Scottish and Rotherham before becoming a main part of the Bath pack in the West Country.

Ben Earl

Postion: Flanker Club: Saracens

A former England U20 captain, back row forward Ben Earl has been steadily making progress at the reigning European and Premiership champions over the past few season's.

His potential was recognised as he travelled with England on the 2018 tour of South Africa and was part of the squad for the 2019 Six Nations but he is still looking for his first Test appearance.

Earl has been one of the standout players in the Gallagher Premiership this season with six tries in eight games, while away from rugby he graduated from Queen Mary University with a degree in comparative literature in July 2019.

Ollie Thorley

Position: Wing Club: Gloucester

A mermorable 2018/19 season saw Ollie Thorley named RPA Player's Young Player of the Season as well as win Citizen Try of the Season for his effort against Leicester Tigers in round seven.

He became the youngest player to play for the Cherry and Whites in the professional era when he played against Northampton in November 2013 at the age of 17.

Now 23, Thorley was a member of the England U20 squad that won World Rugby Championship in 2016 and was called up by Eddie Jones last season ahead of the Guinness Six Nations last year.

Fraser Dingwall

Position: Centre Club: Northampton Saints

Described as a natural leader by Northampton Saints director of rugby Chris Boyd, 20-year-old Fraser Dingwall's influence on a team has already been recognised as he was named England U20 captain last season for the Six Nations and the World Rugby Under 20 Championship.

After representing Scotland up until Under 18 level, he switched alligence to England while at the Saints academy and flourished last season being nominated for the Premiership Rugby Cup’s Breakthrough Player of the Season.

His 12 appearances so far have brought four tries which has resulted in his first senior call-up.

George Furbank

Position: Full back Club: Northampton Saints

George Furbank's performances this season in the Gallagher Premiership have seen him be one of the most impactful players in the league as he sits third for metres made (495), eighth for defenders beaten (27) and ninth for carries (81).

The 23-year-old started his career at hometown club Huntingdon RFC before joining Saints' academy in 2015, and made a try-scoring debut for the club in 2017.

It was a breakthrough campaign for Furbank last season with four tries in 18 outings and he has made the 15 shirt his own at Franklin's Gardes this season with 12 appearances already, with three tries.

Alex Moon

Position: Lock Club: Northampton Saints

Standing at over two metres tall, former England U18 and U20 lock Alex Moon has had an upbringing surrounded by rugby - his father Jon helped coach at Ipswich RFC while his uncle Steve played for rugby league side Bradford Bulls.

Moon, 23, joined Saints in 2015 as part of the academy set up and helped the club with the Premiership Rugby A League title in 2017 and 2018.

It was under Saints director of rugby Chris Boyd where he got his chance in the Saints first team as he made his first start for the club last season as he made 18 appearances and scored his first ever try in the Black, Green and Gold.

Will Stuart

Position: Prop Club: Bath

A new arrival at the The Recreation Ground for the 2019/20 season, tighthead prop Will Stuart progressed through the academy at Wasps, where he spent time on loan at Greene King IPA Championship outfit Nottingham, before his move to the West Country.

The 23-year-old, who won the World Rugby U20 Championship with England in 2016, has established himself in the Blue, Black and White this season with two tries in his 14 appearances.

Bath director of rugby Stuart Hooper described his performances so far as "outstanding" as he has fetured in every single league game, and was part of a front row who recieved at standing ovation from The Rec after a dominanent scrummaging performance in the win over Northampton in November.

Jacob Umaga

Position: Fly half Club: Wasps

The son of former Samoa back Mike Umaga and nephew of ex-All Black Tana Umaga, Jacob has been part of a rugby family from an early age.

The 21-year-old, who was born in Halifax when his father was playing rugby league in Yorkshire, was promoted to the Wasps senior set-up at the start of this season and has made 10 outings, racking up 70 points including two tries.

Umaga, who can also play full back or centre, has represented England at Under 18 and Under 20 level, has spent time on loan in the Greene King IPA Championship at Yorkshire Carnegie, and in 2018 won the Mitre Cup playing for Auckland in New Zealand.

Josh Hodge

Position: Full back Club: Newcastle Falcons

Left-footed, goal-kicking full back Josh Hodge was the top points scorer at the World Rugby Under 20 Championship last summer as he slotted all of his 24 attemps at the sticks and scored two tries.

A talented all-round sportsman, the 19-year-old joined Sedburgh School on a sports scholarship for running and rugby, was part of the Preston North End academy from age seven and represented Great Britain at Under 21 level at the age of 15 in clay pigeon shooting. 

Hodge's natural speed and elusive footwork are a key part of his game and is part of the Newcastle side that top the Championship this season with a perfect record so far with nine wins from nine.

Alex Mitchell

Position: Scrum half Club: Northampton Saints

Alex Mitchell is not unfamiliar to international rugby having represented England from Under 16 to Under 20 level, as well as starting at scrum half at Twickenham Stadium last summer as an England XV beat the Barbarians 51-43.

The younger brother of Connacht scrum half James Mitchell, he was part of the academy at Sale Sharks before his moved to Northampton in 2015.

Dangerous around the fringes and with explosive speed from the base of the ruck, the 22-year-old was named Saints' Young Player of the Season last season as he scored 11 tries in 29 appearances.
