As England vs Argentina draws closer, we take a look back at five famous fixtures between the two sides.
1990
England 51 - 0 Argentina
England’s largest winning margin against the Pumas came at Twickenham back in 1990 as Will Carling captained the side to a resounding 51-0 victory on home turf.
Tries from Jon Hall and Richard Hill, as well as a Jeremy Guscott brace and hat-trick courtesy of Rory Underwood made for a thrilling game in front of a rapturous home crowd.
For many, the game will forever been remembered for one incident which saw 18-year-old prop Fredrico Mendez red-carded for a hit on Paul Ackford.
The young Argentine emerged from a collapsed scrum and struck the hooker, who was a serving police officer at the time. After serving a four-week ban Mendez went on to win 73 caps for the Pumas.
2009
Argentina 24 - 22 England
Argentina last recorded a win against England back in 2009, when they claimed a slim 24-22 victory at Estadio Padre Ernesto Martearena in Salta, Argentina.
An early try from Juan Manuel Leguizamon and three penalties from Juan Martin Hernandez, with an Andy Goode penalty in response, left England trailing 14-3 at half time.
Gonzalo Camacho’s early score in the second half was met by a further four penalties from Goode, before Matt Banahan crossed for England’s only try of the afternoon.
2011
England 13 - 9 Argentina
Expectations were high and anticipation fever pitch as Martin Johnson prepared his men for their opening bout of the 2011 Rugby World Cup against Felipe Contepomi’s Pumas.
If England were to secure a path out of the group stages and safe passage to the quarter finals, it was vital they got off to a positive start against the third ranked seeds Argentina.

What unfolded was a desperately tight encounter, where the hugely physical Puma pack had control, and kept England at bay.
Ben Youngs replaced Richard Wigglesworth on the 50-minute mark, and turned into England's saviour 16 minutes later, crossing over from close range to edge out a 13-9 victory that put his side in poll position and firm control of their own destiny.
2017
England 21 - 8 Argentina
A man of the match performance from Mako Vunipola and a first Test try for Nathan Hughes are just two of the stand-out moments from this memorable fixture against the Pumas.
Semesa Rokoduguni also found the line, with George Ford’s boot providing the additional points to secure victory in a game described by Eddie Jones as ‘a grindathon’.
Nicolas Sanchez’s consolation try in the 78th minute came too little too late, as 81,000 Twickenham fans applauded yet another England victory on home soil.
2019
England 39 - 10 Argentina
Eddie Jones’ England secured their quarter-final spot in the 2019 Rugby World Cup after an emphatic victory over Argentina in Tokyo.
Argentina were dealt an early blow in the 17th minute when Tomas Lavanini was sent off for a reckless hit on England captain Owen Farrell.
Jonny May, Elliot Daly, Ben Youngs, George Ford, Jack Nowell and Luke Cowan-Dickie each found the try line, ensuring their spot in the knock-out stages with another pool game still to play.
