Harry Jon the apprentice is hired
Harry Jon Morgan was not interested in becoming Lord Alan Sugar’s apprentice, instead what he wanted was to be hired for the first ever apprenticeship in the RFU’s Rugby365 programme across host clubs.
Having completed a degree in Sports Coaching, Harry Jon signed up to for the 25-hour a week programme that would provide an NVQ in Leisure Management. The programme helped him develop his knowledge of all aspects of running a successful rugby club, with 10 hours’ coaching a week, 10 hours spent on club and ground maintenance and five hours on events and hospitality.
He said: ‘I love all things rugby so it was great to be able to have this apprenticeship with Billingham RUFC, having joined them as a player in 2012.
‘This apprenticeship has opened up doors I wouldn’t have thought of. I would recommend the scheme to others as it made me a stand-out candidate and has enabled me to take the next step in my career.”
Harry Jon is now starting a position at East Durham College as a Sports Facilities Assistant while they train him to become a lecturer for the college.
Billingham RUFC Chairman, Mark Armstrong, added “We are very proud of Harry Jon’s achievements and wish him every success in the next stage of his career. We are keen to support our players to develop their playing and work careers and will be continuing the scheme with our next apprentice for this season.
Billingham Rugby Union Football Club has four men’s teams, Colts, and a Youth Section which that boasts 13 teams including two girls teams. Now based in Greenwood Road, Billingham, the club was one of the first local clubs to receive a Rugby 365 Artificial Grass Pitch facility and is testament to the benefits of the investment by the RFU both on and off the field. The additional games and training sessions allow more participation at flexible times to suit modern playing demands.
The numbers of registered female rugby players involved in the sport is now around 37,000.
