Leighton Buzzard RFC Becomes Vaccination Hub

Leighton Buzzard RFC, having supported the NHS through special T-shirts earlier in the pandemic, is now becoming part of the country’s network of vaccination centres fighting Covid-19.

For the past few weeks, they have been working closely with their local Primary Care Network and the Bedfordshire Clinical Commissioning Group to transform the club into a community vaccination hub.

With the NHS currently offering the vaccine to those most at risk from coronavirus, including the over 80s, those working in care homes and health and social care workers at high risk, the clubhouse and facilities at Wright’s Meadow will be serving the community and patients of local GP surgeries 12 hours a day, seven days a week.

"We were contacted just prior to Christmas and it’s been extremely busy since then," said club chairman Lee Beaumont. "The clubhouse layout and car park were thought to make an ideal community Vaccination Centre.

"We didn’t hesitate to offer our help and are immensely proud to do so. The sooner we can control the virus, the sooner we can have a return to normality."

Police, fire brigade, clinicians, and various volunteer groups from across the town have been on site coordinating the setting up of the vaccination hub with the PCN. Like most rugby clubs Leighton Buzzard has a number of front line workers among their members and Lee and others have volunteered to help wherever they can.
