Livi loves rugby
Eight-year-old Livi Moorbey's rugby poem shortlisted at Live Canon Children's poetry competition.
Earlier in the year, with pupils at Berrywood Primary School off during March's stormy weather, eight-year-old Livi Moorbey was set a task by her teachers of writing a poem about storms.
As a keen U8 at Trojans rugby club, Livi decided instead to write about girls playing rugby. Not only did her teachers, Mrs Woods and Mrs Yoeman, forgive the change of subject, but they also suggested it was entered into the Live Canon Children’s poetry competition, where it was shortlisted.
Ellie’s an inspiration
As one of five girls in her club team, Livi’s rugby inspiration is Ellie Boatman, who plays for Wasps and England Sevens. When she turned seven, she received a birthday card from Ellie for her second birthday spent in lockdown, then finding out Ellie had played for Trojans whilst at university her dedication was complete. The card still has pride of place at home.
Livi’s older brother Edward plays for Trojans U10s and says mum, Chantelle: “It’s not so much Edward encouraging his sister as Livi being determined that anything the boys can do, the girls can do too! When Trojans took two coachloads to see England women beat Wales at Kingsholm, all five of the Trojans U8 girls went and loved every moment.”
Here is the poem recited by Livi herself:
