Northampton Casuals host epic rugby weekend

Forget the January blues, there’s nothing like getting record numbers of senior players back out onto the pitch playing rugby

And that’s exactly what they achieved at Northampton Casuals RFC when no fewer than 108 senior men in five teams took to the field for their first rugby weekend of 2023.

With the club recently celebrating its centenary, Casuals clearly continue to go from strength to strength and a really positive sign is that of their 108 seniors who were playing, over 70% came through the club’s ranks, starting their rugby in the mini and junior teams. The homegrown talent also includes 17 of last year's Colts, who regularly return for club rugby from their universities.

Chairman Nick Smith said: “It’s unusual to get grassroots community rugby clubs turning out five senior teams on one Saturday. I think it speaks volumes about our players’ motivation to play for a club that they have a real commitment to, where they know they can experience enjoyable rugby with a great team atmosphere, and a high quality coaching team led by head coach Adam Baker. And bringing a huge number through from mini ranks - that’s what success looks like.”

The Casuals teams had three wins, and two losses but rugby was clearly the winner at Rush Mills in Northampton, as they look forward to the year ahead and nurturing their girls, mini and junior teams with the hope that they too will be still involved in the game at senior level.
