Riding one million metres in colleague’s memory
In November, Kerry 'KP' Packer and Michael 'Doc' Cox mounted Wattbikes to ride one million metres in just 50 hours in memory of their friend, CPO Graham ‘Sid’ Street, who recently died from cancer.
The M6/50 challenge aimed to keep Sid’s legacy alive in raising funds for a national charity that he was a proud patron of. Charlie’s Beach Hut in Perranporth, Cornwall, provides families of children with life limiting illnesses and families of fire-fighters that have suffered bereavement, or life changing injury in the line of duty, a relaxing environment to forge forever memories.
On Remembrance Sunday M6/50 took place at Portsmouth Rugby Club, where Sid would often be seen on a weekend as a player and coach, and the pair raised over £2,500 for Charlie’s Beach Hut.
Said Kerry: "Sid was a huge character and always there when anyone needed help or advice. During his illness Sid raised over £250,000 for various cancer charities and it seemed fitting to keep his memory alive in raising funds for one of his personal favourites, Charlie’s Beach Hut.
"Made in the Royal Navy isn’t just a slogan, it’s actually what we are about. We’re here to support each other in all circumstances, even after our demise. Hopefully we can do him proud and whilst it’s going to be hard graft, Doc and I can at least have the solace of knowing we’re not suffering alone! We’ll likely take the opportunity to revel in each other’s torment!"
Kerry and Michael, who both coach at their local rugby clubs, hope the event becomes an annual fixture for clubs to raise money for charities under the M6/50 challenge banner.
