Rugby Tribute to Bob

For Bob Savory, Chosen Hill Former Pupils RFC was his rugby home. It was the only club the prop forward played for.

His sons Ian, Marc and Luke followed in his footsteps to join the club, and are still playing for Chosen Hill. He encouraged his sons and daughter Niki to play for Spartans RFC in their youth as at the time Chosen Hill FP didn't have a youth set up. Niki later played for Hucclecote RFC as a senior, and went on to represent the South West.

The family loves rugby and Bob’s wife Jo was his number one fan. She supported him as a player, when he retired from playing to become chairman of the club and through his representation on the Gloucestershire Combination committee.

Everyone knew Dr Bob, as they called him, and everyone held great affection for him. That is why when he was recently struck down by the coronavirus, being taken to Gloucester Royal Hospital, where he died despite excellent nursing and medical care, they wanted to pay tribute to a marvellous rugby gentleman.

A talented young player, 18 year old Josh 'Fridge' Forrester-Rodway, decided to shave his head completely in aid of Cheltenham and Gloucester Hospitals Charity. As more heads were shaved and donations grew, Bob’s daughter Niki said if fundraising reached £10,000 she would also shave her head.

With £11,500 + GiftAid raised said Bob’s son Luke: “Rugby meant so much to my dad. The staff and the hospital did so much for him and my mum in his last few days and the club and local rugby community have been amazing in their support."
