Three Cheers for Three Generations

They say it’s a generation thing, but it’s a three generation thing for the Muirhead family at Stockton RFC.

In a recent friendly fixture against Sedgefield, patriarch Derek Muirhead, at 68, his son Dan, who is 44, and 18-year-old grandson Aaron were on the same team.

Derek was in the past Stockton’s first team captain and coach and is now a Durham County referee. He was playing flanker. Dan, who plays hooker or prop in the first team squad, was in the front row. Aaron, who also plays at Northumbria University where he is studying Psychology, still has the legs to turn on the speed and cover centre or wing.

In a convincing 52-26 win, Derek was in real danger of scoring a try, but admits he didn’t really manage to sell a dummy to the opposition. “Your mind still knows what to do but sometimes your body doesn’t obey,” he laughs.

Derek and Dan run their own company, Deepdale Holdings, a specialist construction manufacturing company based in Hartlepool and at the friendly fixture they built a real rapport with the supporters, before everyone enjoyed socially distanced drinks beside the pitch.
