Barnes crowned World Rugby referee of the year

England Rugby’s Wayne Barnes was crowned referee of the year at the World Rugby awards.

Barnes, 40, is one of the most experienced referees of all time, having taken charge of his 90th test last Friday with the bronze final between New Zealand and Wales in Tokyo at the end of his fourth Rugby World Cup.

A good communicator on the field, and a part-time barrister and trial advocate in London off it, Barnes has been an international referee for 13 years.

With an attention to detail that is first-class, he is a great team player and leader who is always willing to help others learn.

He beat fellow nominees Jérôme Garcès (France), Nigel Owens (Wales), and Jaco Peyper (South Africa) to the award.

Born in the Forest of Dean Wayne, who has earned great respect throughout the rugby world for his knowledge and composure, refereed his first Premiership game in 2005.

England Rugby’s Head of Professional Game Match Officials, Tony Spreadbury said: “We were delighted to see Wayne presented with this prestigious award.  He has put in very consistent and accurate high performances in Tier 1 games and this recognition is richly deserved.”
