British Asian Rugby Awards in Parliament
The British Asian Rugby Association’s (BARA) inaugural awards recognising the achievements of British South Asians in rugby league and union will take place in Speaker’s House at the Palace of Westminster on 4th November.
The landmark event will highlight British South Asians’ contributions to rugby and the wider community and aims to drive positive change.
Dr Ikram Butt, BARA founder and the first British Asian to represent England in either league or union said: “This represents a milestone moment as the awards recognise the success of South Asians who have inspired others, changed perceptions, and impacted their communities. Hosting the event in Parliament underscores its importance and the growing recognition of representation and inclusivity in sport.
“BARA has always sought to use rugby as a medium for social change, cultural understanding, and to foster community cohesion. At a time when society faces challenges like race riots and Islamophobia, sport can unite people, break down prejudices, and promote a sense of belonging.”
It is hoped that the awards, with key figures from the world of politics, rugby, business, media and community leadership coming together, will become an annual celebration bringing discussion on how sport can unify communities, highlighting diversity and inclusion in rugby and offering a counter-narrative to discrimination.
Sir Lindsay Hoyle, Speaker of the House, said: "It is a privilege to host the British Asian Rugby Awards in Speaker’s House. This event is testament to the growing representation and success of British South Asians in rugby and celebrates athletic achievement and the power of sport in fostering unity, respect, and diversity in our society. I am honoured to support BARA’s efforts.”
Phil Davies, former Welsh captain and international coach and current World Rugby Director of Rugby added: “As rugby continues to grow globally, it’s inspiring to see initiatives like the British Asian Rugby Awards celebrating the contributions of diverse communities to the sport. Our sport’s spirit is all about coming together, breaking down barriers, and creating opportunities for all, driving positive change on and off the field.”
Rt Hon Lord Addington, vice president of the UK Sports Association and captain of the Commons & Lords RFU Team, said: “It’s wonderful to see the British Asian Rugby Awards highlighting the achievements of British South Asians in rugby. Rugby’s essence lies in its ability to bridge communities and promote understanding through teamwork and shared passion. I look forward to being part of an event that reflects the unifying power of the sport.”
