Olney RFC's kit in Kenya

The rugby club has been part of a kit drive.

On a gap year before university, Charlie Hicks taught at Pembroke House a school in Gilgil, Kenya.

“It was a great experience and I met many fantastic people there,” he recalls.

Then, while studying for his degree, he became a student ambassador for the kit4kenya charity supplying football kits around the world and set up by a school pupil who’d been in the year above James.

Knowing how much sports kit was needed by Kenyan rugby players, Charlie then got help from his club Olney RFC.

“I ordered kit for the Olney Sevens team to send out to Kenya beyond our tournament. That didn’t arrive in time so got sent out brand new to a university side called Kabarak,” says Charlie.

A friend he made at Pembroke House plays rugby for Menengai Oilers and the Kenyan national team and Charlie raided the Olney RFC store cupboard to send out more kit.

In all he sent kit to clubs in Diani and Nakuru where they are being proudly worn, as well as to the Pioneer Academy based in Gilgil, set up by his friend Xammie at Pembroke House.

“They were all very glad to receive the kit,” he says “and it’s great to see it making a difference to players in Kenya.”
