Richmondshire RUFC installs solar panels to boost eco-friendly ambitions
Richmondshire RUFC has recently installed solar panels as part of their bid to become the most eco-friendly rugby club in North Yorkshire.
With the support of Harmony Energy, a local solar farm, and through club fundraising and grant applications, Richmondshire RUFC has installed a 10-panel solar system on their clubhouse.
Nick Hunter, Club Chair, said: “We are delighted with our new acquisition. The system will help us in our aim to become net carbon zero within the next ten years and, in the short term, reduce our day-to-day running costs at the club.”
The club has set itself an ambitious target to become the most eco-friendly rugby club in North Yorkshire in the next five years.
Over the coming months, the club plans to improve its floodlit training area to reduce energy bills and environmental impact by installing a new, high-quality lighting system.
Meanwhile, on the pitch, the club has a men’s 1st XV and 2nd XV, a women’s team, and over 100 junior players training and playing every weekend.
Their strong participation numbers demonstrate how rugby is thriving at the club; an impressive turnaround, given that less than two years ago Richmondshire struggled to field even one team. In 2022, the club was forced to withdraw from the RFU leagues.
Fortunately, the club rallied after the 2022 season and re-entered the Yorkshire 4 league last year.
Their determination was rewarded at the end of the 2023 season when they won a filmed club takeover day. Cameramen from the RFU visited the club to film players in action, culminating in one of their games being broadcast live on the England Rugby YouTube channel.
The club is also seeking a long-term, whole-club sponsor to support them as they approach their 40th birthday celebrations in the 2026/27 season.
