Rugby volunteers rewarded in New Year’s honours
Volunteers from the rugby family have been awarded British Empire Medals for their services to grassroots rugby.
William ‘Shay’ Good from Wymondham Rugby Club and Mark Newey from Haywards Heath Rugby Club were both honoured for their outstanding contributions.
Shay Good serves as Wymondham’s Secretary and Registrar and has been with the club for over 50 years. He has played a key role in encouraging and supporting users of the Game Management System (GMS).
Shay was also recognised by the RFU at the Honda Volunteer Recognition Lunch for his work in GMS user groups, as well as for assisting other local clubs and volunteers.
Wymondham Rugby Club said: “Shay has been an integral part of Wymondham Rugby Club since 1972, contributing as a player, member, and tireless volunteer. His dedication and commitment to our club and the sport have been nothing short of extraordinary.
“We couldn’t be prouder to see him recognised in the King’s New Year Honours. Shay, you are a true legend and a valuable member of our rugby family.”
Meanwhile, Mark Newey from Haywards Heath Rugby Club is now in his 26th year at the club and has recently been appointed President after serving 13 years as Chairman.
During his tenure, Mark and a team of dedicated volunteers have revitalised their club’s senior squad and built Haywards Heath into one of the largest youth rugby clubs in Sussex.
He has also played, coached, refereed, fundraised, and led the development of a state-of-the-art community sports facility.
Newey said: “It’s fantastic to win the award – but I do feel humbled by it. There are so many volunteers at my club and across the country.
“In everything I do, I try to give it my best and approach it with as much enthusiasm as I can. I’ve recently been called a cheerleader – which at 58 years old, wasn’t quite what I was expecting!
“Our club is a community, and we aim to create an environment where everyone feels welcome. If someone moves away, they know they’re always welcome back, no matter how long it’s been.”
RFU Chief Executive, Bill Sweeney, said: “Shay Good and Mark Newey have made significant contributions to their clubs and communities through their dedication and hard work.
“Their commitment to grassroots rugby is commendable, and this recognition highlights the vital role volunteers play in supporting the game at all levels.”
