Alex Matthews
Alex burst onto the international scene in 2011 and was among the youngest members to lift the Rugby World Cup trophy in 2014, having come off the bench to play in the last 15 minutes of the final. She studied Sports Psychology at Roehampton Uni and worked as a PA for children with disabilities.Alex featured in every game of the 2017 World Cup in Ireland, receiving the player of the match for her performance against the USA and started the final against New Zealand. Contracted to sevens after the 2014 World Cup, she returned for the 2017-18 season and took Bronze at the 2018 Commonwealth Games. Voted RPA Women’s Sevens Player of the Year 2018, Alex played in all five HSBC World Rugby Women's Sevens Series events that season. Alex represented the Red Roses in autumn 2020 and the 2021 Six Nations and was part of the Team GB squad who finished fourth at Tokyo 2020. She featured in the squad that made the final of the delayed 2021 Rugby World Cup and toured with the Red Roses on their title-winning campaign at the inaugural WXV tournament in New Zealand. Alex was part of the side that won the 2024 Six Nations Grand Slam and the WXV1 title later that year. She has recently been named in the 2025 Six Nations squad.

The back row consists of two flankers and the No 8. The blind-side flanker wears six and the open-side flanker seven, both specialising in big tackles and winning possession through turnovers. They are fearless, strong and fast to the breakdown. The No 8 secures the ball at the base of the scrum, is an attacking link between forwards and backs and a real force when defending.
