Mother and daughter playing at their family club
Aston Old Edwardians Women recently celebrated a special moment as mother and daughter, Sam Hart and Lucy Thewlis, ran out together for the first time when their team faced Birmingham Moseley Women.
The occasion was equally special for Ross Hart, their father and grandfather, who captained the club in the 1973/74 season and has served as the club’s chairman.
Sam has been a dedicated member of the women’s team for the past eight seasons, while Lucy started playing rugby with the club's minis and juniors.
Lucy left after her U16s season because there weren’t enough players but carried on playing and represented North Midlands at U16s and U18s as part of the England Rugby Developing Player Programme.
This season, she’s back at her home club and part of the senior women’s team.
Sam said: “It’s such a great feeling to play with Lucy. During our first game, I thought I’d be worried about her. But before you knew it, I was at the bottom of a ruck, and by the time I’d got up, she had the ball and was flying.
“It’s such a great thing to do, something fun with your child. Lucy and I have very different responsibilities in the team, I play in the second row while she’s in the centres. But we can both play to our strengths which is the great thing about rugby.
“I’ve made some great friendships through the team and I’m looking forward to Lucy making great friendships through her time here too.”
Research from Women in Sport shows that six in 10 teenage girls do not meet the recommended activity guidelines of 60 minutes per day, but mothers and mother figures can help. 48% of teenage girls say their mum, aunts, and female role models encourage them to be active.
The #TimeTogether campaign wants to encourage mums and their teenage daughters to have fun whilst getting active and making new memories.
